Hours Worked Calculator

Calculate daily or weekly hours worked from clock-in and clock-out times, unpaid breaks, multiple shifts, and overnight schedules.

Shift 1

Worked: 8 hr 30 min (8.50 decimal hours)

Total worked
8 hr 30 min
Decimal hours
8.50
Regular hours
8 hr 30 min
Overtime hours
0 hr 0 min

Overtime is a planning split using your selected threshold. It is not legal or tax advice, and gross pay excludes taxes and deductions.

How to Calculate Hours Worked

Enter each shift’s start time, end time, and unpaid break. The calculator keeps the calculation in minutes, subtracts breaks, and displays both clock hours and decimal hours. Add up to seven shifts for a weekly total.

Hours and Minutes vs. Decimal Hours

Minutes converted to decimal hours
Clock timeDecimal hours
15 minutes0.25
30 minutes0.50
45 minutes0.75
60 minutes1.00

Weekly Hours and Overtime

For a 45-hour week with a 40-hour threshold, the result is 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours. At $20 per hour and a 1.5x multiplier, estimated gross pay is $950.00: $800.00 regular pay plus $150.00 overtime pay.

Overnight Shifts

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ends the next day. This keeps a 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM shift at eight scheduled hours before subtracting any unpaid break.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate hours worked?

Subtract clock-in time from clock-out time, then subtract unpaid break minutes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the shift as overnight.

How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?

Enter the unpaid lunch break in minutes. For example, an eight-hour span with a 30-minute unpaid break equals 7.5 hours worked.

How are overnight shifts calculated?

When clock-out is earlier than or equal to clock-in, the shift is carried into the next day. A 10 PM to 6 AM shift is eight scheduled hours before breaks.

What is the difference between hours and decimal hours?

Hours and minutes use a clock format, while decimal hours divide minutes by 60. Thirty minutes is 0.50 decimal hours.

How are overtime hours calculated?

The calculator compares total weekly minutes with your selected threshold, which defaults to 40 hours. This is a planning estimate, not a legal determination.

Can this calculator calculate gross pay?

Yes. Enter an hourly rate to estimate gross pay for regular and overtime hours. Taxes, deductions, benefits, and local wage rules are not included.
